Step into a journey of creativity, meaning, and connection with FIC staff as we present “Indigenous Art Walk” at SFU. This guided walking tour offers a unique opportunity to experience publicly accessible Indigenous art across SFU Burnaby and the surrounding Burnaby Mountain Park—each artwork telling stories of place, culture, and identity.
Using the ímesh mobile app, participants will navigate between the scattered pieces of art, activate geolocation features, and engage with the works in situ. These works represent diverse media, styles, and traditions—some drawing on ancient practices, others innovating in form—yet all are grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing.
Through this walk you can:
-
See artworks like Bear Mother, Dogfish Woman, Black Eagle, Frog Constellation, NexwNiwChet (The Teachings), Written into the Earth, Blue Herons, Declaration of Spirit and more Simon Fraser University.
-
Learn about the artists and the deep cultural knowledge that informs their creations—how land, ancestry, and worldview are woven into form and meaning. Simon Fraser University
-
Reflect on Indigenous perspectives of land not merely as physical ground, but as relationship—between humans, non-humans, the land, water, sky, past and future. Simon Fraser University
While each stop gives a brief introduction, the walk is designed to spark curiosity. You’re encouraged to follow up on the stories and pieces that resonate most.
Join us to witness art that is alive—with meaning, history, and possibility. Let’s walk together, learn together, and be inspired by voices both ancient and contemporary as expressed through Indigenous art at SFU.
