Campus Safety Planning
FIC is committed to the health and safety of the community. As we navigate through COVID-19 together we are working to ensure confidence in returning to campus. The Communicable Diseases Plan can be downloaded below to provide information on the plans for an eventual safe return to campus. Students planning to arrive or return to Canada should check the travelling to Canada page and the Travel Guide for more information.

Fall 2021 Information
Effective August 25, masks are required in all indoor common areas and learning spaces on all SFU campuses and across BC. The province also announced today the requirement for masks on transit. This is an important step as the community relies on transit. These health orders will hopefully increase the comfort level for everyone on campus.
FIC/SFU will use the BC Vaccine Card on our campuses beginning September 13.
On August 23, 2021, the Provincial Health Officer announced the BC Vaccine Card, which will be implemented beginning September 13 for discretionary activities and events during this period of high risk. The BC Vaccine Card will be required for those over 12 to prove vaccination for admission to some activities and events.
You will need to prove vaccination in order to:
- Live in student housing. (Note that the requirement for proof of vaccination for student housing comes into effect September 7)
- Participate in varsity and intramural athletics
- Use gyms or recreation facilities
- Attend student clubs, sports, theatre, performances and other FIC events
- Dine indoors or on patios at all dining facilities on campus
Other activities requiring proof of vaccination will be forthcoming. This is a complex system to put in place especially as we have students around the world. We are collaborating with SFU and Provincial Health to ensure there are efficient ways for students from other countries to meet the vaccination requirements. We know this may take some additional time with travel, quarantine arrangements and the vaccine card implementation. For this reason we have decided that the first two weeks of classes will be held remotely and in person classes will begin on September 22nd.
- Orientation for new students: September 7th (remote)
- First day of classes: September 8th (in-person classes held as remote synchronous classes)
- First face to face classes for in-person sections: September 22nd
Please remember that starting August 25th everyone is to wear a mask when you come to campus and to get vaccinated now if you haven’t already. Vaccination clinics on will be available on SFU campus and throughout the community. Please connect with an FIC Advisor if you have any questions.
Today’s announcements are about ensuring we have as many layers of protection as possible in place for the fall semester and our community safety. We all have a part to play in ensuring the in-person experiences this fall are safe for our community. Thank you all for taking the necessary steps.
Summer 2021 Information
We know you are anticipating changes this year as the COVID 19 vaccine rolls out around the world. As FIC and SFU plan for summer 2021, we continue to balance the start-up of in-person activities against the possibility that restrictions will continue to remain high. Global mobility remains limited and we will prepare to offer the same type of flexibility as we have in the past so you can continue your studies.
We are planning to deliver mostly remote courses in the Summer 2021 semester and will consider in-person teaching under certain conditions. Most likely, FIC will begin with experiential courses, lab sciences and engineering courses and then will work through options and models for returning core courses to face to face delivery. We will have a final decision made in March about in-person teaching for the Summer 2021 term.
Fall 2021 Information
We want to let you know about our planning processes for the upcoming Fall 2021 semester as we work towards returning to in-person teaching and activities as soon as it is safe to do so.
We are evaluating different scenarios with SFU and health authorities including:
- A large-scale return to our campuses this September; or
- A significant return to face-to-face interactions, although with many pandemic protocols still in place.
We know there are still many concerns around travelling and global mobility. We will work to remain flexible with options for students to continue studying as we work through this transition as a community. We look forward to welcoming you to campus again when the time is right for you and your family.
More information will become available over the coming months, with a more complete update in June to support your personal planning processes. Several administrative and academic planning committees are working on this decision and we invite you to give us your feedback, ideas and suggestions through the student survey we will be launching in the next few weeks.
We will continue to learn from our experience with remote delivery and pay attention to useful innovations of the past year that we want to build into our future. Regardless of the direction for September, we do anticipate based on our current state of knowledge that by the end of the 2021-22 academic year, SFU and FIC will have returned fully to on-campus activities.
This announcement may bring up many questions we don’t have answers to yet so continuing to reach out for support is a good idea.
