The UTP Stage I is designed to adequately prepare you for entry to university level programs in the Business Administration, Computing Science, Engineering Science and Arts and Social Sciences fields. The UTP Stage I consists of eight courses of study. Successful completion of the program with the necessary grades guarantees you entry to the FIC UTP Stage II. In addition to formal contact hours, FIC provides you with extra support through individual consultation with teachers, tutorials in mathematics and English language, and self access computer laboratories.
UTP I Course Selections • BUS108 – Business Management • COM001 – Introduction to Computing Concepts & Algorithms • COM002 – Introduction to Computers & Their Applications • ECN100 – Introduction to Economics • ESR100 – English Skills / Reading • ESW100 – English Skills / Writing • MTH099 – Beginning with Algebra • MTH101 – Introduction to Mathematics • MTH103 – Foundations of Mathematics • PHL120 – Elementary Formal Logic
Students must complete 8 courses with required subjects in English; math; business; and computing:
REQUIRED: Two courses in English: • ESR100 AND ESW100 One course in Math: • MTH099 OR MTH101 OR MTH103 One course in Business: • BUS108 OR ECN100 One course in Computing: • COM001 OR COM002
To advance to UTP II, students are required to achieve a passing grade of 50% (or D grade) in eight (8) courses, with required subjects in English; Math; Business; and Computing in order to adequately prepare students for the academic rigours of University study at SFU:
The Mixed Program is designed specifically for those students whose English language proficiency is slightly below that required to undertake a full academic load. This program combines full-time English language study delivered at FIC on the Burnaby campus with two academic courses from the UTP Stage I or UTP Stage II. A minimum IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent is required for the Mixed Program.

• AES100 – Academic English Skills plus (+) • two academic courses from the appropriate UTP level
Mixed UTP I: • AES100 + • ECN100 / computing / math Students may not take English / BUS108 / PHL120 until a passing grade in AES100 is obtained.
Mixed UTP II: • AES100 + • economics / math / statistics / computing Students may only take subjects listed above until a passing grade in AES100 is obtained.
Progression to FIC UTP Stage II Upon successful completion of the UTP Stage I program, you will progress to a UTP Stage II program in Business Administration , Computing Science , Engineering Science or Arts and Social Sciences then articulate into the second year of an appropriate Bachelor degree program at SFU . |
