If you do not meet the minimum English language requirements for your program, you may choose to enroll in a recognized ESL college to improve your English language proficiency.

Mixed Program - Combined English language and academic program

The Mixed Program is designed specifically for those students whose English language proficiency is slightly below that required to undertake a full academic load. This program combines full-time English language study delivered at FIC on the Burnaby campus with two academic courses from the UTP Stage I or UTP Stage II. A minimum IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent is required for the Mixed Program.

Preparation in Academic Skills (PAS)

Preparation in Academic Skills (PAS) is a program designed to provide English language training for university-bound international students with an intermediate level of English. Upon completion of PAS, students are eligible to enter Fraser International College at Simon Fraser University.

In a 14-week semester, PAS offers

• Intensive practice in English speaking, listening, reading and writing
• Introduction to the culture of Canada and Canadian higher education
• Learning projects and experience in and around Vancouver

Through this three-fold focus, PAS students will come to feel at home in both English and in Canada. They will also be prepared for academic life at a Canadian university. The best thing about PAS is that it is located right on the campus of Simon Fraser University. Students share the benefits of experiencing and studying English in one of Canada's top universities.

ESL colleges

Specialist ESL colleges provide international students preparing to enter FIC an opportunity to improve their English language skills through intensive English language programs. All students entering FIC programs must meet the minimum English language requirements.

FIC staff will offer advice regarding specialist ESL colleges in Vancouver at the time of enrollment.
