Entry requirements Print E-mail

There are four points of entry into FIC. These entry points are:

Entry point 1 If you do not meet FIC’s minimum English language entry criterion, it may be necessary for you to attend a specialist ESL college in the first instance. FIC staff will discuss such arrangements with you on an individual basis.
Entry point 2
If you only marginally do not satisfy FIC’s minimum English language entry criterion, you – in your first semester of enrollment at FIC – will be enrolled in the FIC Mixed Program. This program requires you to study 15 hours per week of English and a maximum of two academic units. The FIC Academic Advisor will assist you to select your academic units on an individual basis. Entry to the Mixed Program requires an IELTS score (or equivalent) of 5.0.
Entry point 3
UTP Stage I. This program is designed specifically for students who require additional academic support prior to commencing the full degree-equivalent program (referred to below as UTP Stage II). In many instances, you will be enrolled in UTP Stage I if you have completed Year 11 studies only and/or if you have completed Year 12 but with marginal success. If you have completed Year 11 studies only, you will be required to study all eight courses of the UTP Stage I over two semesters (four courses in each semester). If you have completed Year 12 with marginal success, you may be permitted to transfer to UTP Stage II after completing four courses with a 70% average in those courses.
Entry point 4
UTP Stage II. This program is equivalent to Year 1 of selected degree programs of SFU. Completion of UTP Stage II requires you to pass 10 courses for a total of 30 credit points. Under normal circumstances, these 10 courses would be completed over three semesters. On completion of UTP Stage II, SFU will assess your transfer arrangements to Year 2 of selected university degree programs. In the event that you are granted a transfer, SFU will assign up to 30 credit points of advanced standing. In the event that your transfer is not approved, it may be possible for you to continue studying at FIC to improve your Grade Point Average (GPA) and to complete further courses as approved on an individual basis.
