English language requirements

The language of instruction at FIC is English. Before being granted admission into a program at FIC, you must demonstrate a suitable level of English proficiency. This can be done by obtaining one of the results shown in the table below. Individual band scores apply.

Direct entry

If you have one of the English language qualifications below and meet the relevant academic requirements for your country, you will be eligible for direct entry to UTP Stage I or UTP Stage II.

Mixed entry

If you meet the mixed-entry English language requirements and the relevant academic requirements for your country, you will commence UTP Stage I or UTP Stage II and will also take three units of Academic English in your first term of study.

Your English language preparation

If you do not meet the minimum English language requirements for entry to your desired program at FIC, you may wish to enrol in an intensive English language program at SFU. The SFU Preparation in Academic Skills (PAS) and English Language and Culture (ELC) programs will help you improve your English language skills before starting at FIC.

SFU Preparation in Academic Skills (PAS) program

The SFU PAS program provides English language training for university-bound international students. Students who have achieved an IELTS score of 4.0 or equivalent study a two semester program or students who have obtained IELTS 4.5 or equivalent study a one semester program. PAS English classes are held at SFU's Burnaby campus so that students can enjoy studying English in one of Canada's top universities, with full access to SFU facilities and to FIC.

After successfully completing the PAS program, students are eligible to enrol at FIC.

SFU English Language and Culture (ELC) program

The SFU ELC program is an intensely interactive learning experience in a university setting. It emphasizes the importance of improving your language skills and understanding the culture in which a language is used. Students will be able to continue learning independently outside the classroom, and will gain the confidence to use English in any setting.

Conducted at SFU's Vancouver campus, the ELC program offers a wide range of English language courses, from beginner to advanced levels.

Courses can be taken over four, eight or twelve-week periods depending upon your English language needs. FIC can arrange full-time English tuition at ELC if you need to improve your English skills before commencing your academic study at FIC.

Off-campus English as a Second Language (ESL) colleges

If you don't have an English test score, or if your IELTS score is lower than 4.0 when you apply to FIC, we can offer advice regarding specialist ESL colleges in Vancouver. These colleges offer intensive English language programs, and most have new intakes each month.

Admission requirements

Entry into UTP Stage II generally requires the successful completion of Year 12 of secondary school or its equivalent. Specific academic requirements are listed below.

Not all qualifications are listed, so if you have other qualifications, please send details to admissions@fraseric.ca for assessment. If you have completed secondary school, but your results do not qualify you for entry into UTP Stage II, you may be admitted to UTP Stage I.

Mathematics requirements

Before you start a program at FIC, you will take the Math Placement Assessment.

The completion of secondary school mathematics (or equivalent) at an acceptable level is required for entry into UTP Stage II in the Business Administration, Computing Science and Engineering Science streams. UTP Stage II: Business Administration students who do not meet this requirement must complete the Pre-calculus course in the first term of UTP Stage II, as a prerequisite to the Calculus for Social Sciences I course.

Mature-age entry

If you are a mature-age student (aged 21 or over), you may be admitted into a program without meeting the formal academic requirements if you have documented and relevant work experience and/or another acceptable qualification such as secondary school, college or vocational studies results.
